Our Mission Statement
The Lockport Department of Youth and Recreation is a municipal agency designed to plan and coordinate all your serving activities. Our three dimensional focus is the coordination of existing youth service, development of new programs where the need exists, and elimination of duplication of services.
History
- Founded in 1970 as the Lockport Youth Bureau
- Provided counseling services and programs for community mental health
- Now it provides more recreational services
- Moved in 2000 201 Willow Street from the Lockport Municipal Building
Services
- Provides recreational, educational, and cultural activities for the children and families of the city
- Fulfills the need in the community for an outlet for both parents and children
Our Goals
Our goals are to continue to provide to the youth and/or families of Lockport quality programming in the areas of Youth Service and Recreation by:
- To serve the community to the best of their ability and improve it every step of the way
- To raise awareness to the community
- To enhance each program, and make it better and better, year in and year out
- To add new programs
- To gain local support from the community and local businesses
- Emphasize "Quality Not Quantity!" in the programs they offer
To achieve their goals of more involvement of the community and local businesses they utilize the local cable station, radion station, and local paper for advertisement.
Target Population
Through all of the services and programs offered, the Department of Youth and Recreation reaches the young and old alike. Ages 3 - 93!!!
Budget
- The City is a Non-for-Profit organization
- The budget is split into 4 separate entitites: Salaries and Supplies, Marina, Playgrounds, Commmunity Pool
- City of Lockport budgets approximately $225,000.00 for the Youth and Recreation Department
- NYS allocates around $65,000
- Private funding comes from the local businesses and other service clubs
- They are contacted throughout the year by mail or by personal telephone calls
- Asked for donations or sponsorships
Staff
- 3 full time positions. Turn over rate is very low
- Director started in 1999
- Assistant started in 1988
- Youth Bureau Aide started in 2001
- 6 part time positions
- 35 season positions (lifeguard and summer recreation attendants)
- Training Orientation is given for new employees with several guest speakers from local agencies that come to discuss issues such as child abuse/neglect, first aid, dealing with insurance and other job information
